Recently I was told that in order to succeed, the one virtue prized above all is persistence. Many years ago, then President of the Florida Senate Jim King told my friend, “You want to legalize drugs, just keep showing up.” For over seventeen years people around Florida have picked up the CAN banner and worked locally to help change the dialogue about cannabis.
In the mid 1990’s the body of research on cannabis benefits was growing and one state, California, was on the brink of legalizing cannabis as a medical product. The passage of that law in California set the stage for the modern cannabis movement. Now 33% of the country lives in a state where cannabis is accepted for its therapeutic value. Two U.S. states have legalized cannabis, and one nation, Uruguay, has legalized cannabis for adults, with others considering it.
We anticipate 2014 being another landmark year for cannabis reforms. We’ve developed this program to report directly from Tallahassee during the session to keep you abreast of all the activities related to cannabis reform in Florida.
